Glaucoma affects more than 2.7 million Americans age 40 and older. It is a leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years of age, but because there are no early warning signs, early detection is critical. Proper diagnosis and treatment can prevent the devastating loss of vision. Treatment consists of careful monitoring, eye drops and oral medications, and when necessary, surgery. Daily medication (usually eye drops), laser or surgery will enable most people to control intraocular pressure and retain their vision.
